Denmark is very expensive but being the breakfast lover I am, I made it my mission to find cheap brunch in Copenhagen.

Danish food is one of my favourites this year. It’s so fresh and tasty with a focus on seafood and rye bread. Some of the cafes are slightly pretentious (beetroot latte, anyone?) which makes it difficult to find a cheap breakfast in Copenhagen.

On the plus side, there are some excellent food markets and the cuisine is pretty good for veggies and vegans.

Cheap brunch and breakfast in Copenhagen

During my few days in Copenhagen, I hunted down cute cafes and food markets which won’t break the bank. Start your day at one of these spots:

Raw 42

It’s unusual to find me in a vegan restaurant but I’d go to Raw 42 again and again for the breakfast bowls. My matcha bowl was topped with blueberries, coconut, banana, granola and goji berries. I also had a golden latte made with turmeric and almond milk which was really tasty.

With the healthy bowls starting at 89 Krones, it’s a pretty cheap brunch by Copenhagen standards.

Address: Pilestræde 32, 1112 Copenhagen.

Original Coffee

If you’re looking to grab a cheap brunch in Copenhagen before a day of sightseeing, Original Coffee is a good option. There are four branches but I visited the one of the top of Illum department store. Here you get a bird’s eye view over the central streets of Copenhagen which is lovely if it’s warm enough to eat outside. Breakfast and views = Copenhagen goals!

The breakfast menu includes yoghurt and granola, overnight oats, avocado toast and Danish breakfast plates. None of these dishes are over 50 Krones.

Address: Illum, Østergade 52, 1100 Copenhagen.

Grød, Torvehallerne Market

I made two trips in two days to Torvehallerne. It’s bright and airy with lots of Danish food and world cuisine. Porridge may not sound that exciting but Grøds mission is to make it great again. I had chia porridge which was made with peanut butter, almonds, coconut flakes, banana and greek yoghurt.

Porridge and chai dishes start at 45 Krones making it the cheapest breakfast in Copenhagen by far.

Address: Torvehallerne Market, Frederiksborggade 21, 1360.

REFFEN

If you can wait until 11am (or 12pm on weekdays), consider a trip to REFFEN. This popular street food market is a great place to grab a cheap brunch in Copenhagen without the expense of dining at a restaurant. Crepes a la Carte serve authentic French crepes with a modern twist. There are also countless coffee stands to be found at Reffen.

Address: A, Refshalevej 167, 1432.

Mad & Kafe

At Mad and Kafe you can mix and match items to build your own brunch. Three items come to 94 Krones so if you pick hearty options like bread, bacon or smoked salmon, it’s relatively cheap brunch in Copenhagen. It’s not quite as affordable as Reffen or Torvehallerne Market but the stylish surrounds of this hipster cafe more than make up for it.

Address: Sønder Blvd. 68, 1720.

Thanks for the tip about Grød! We stayed in the area and had breakfast three twice. There was a long line of local patrons when they opened at 9AM (weekends). Can also endorse Reffen. Best way to get there is by bike.
