central America
While living in Mexico, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several Central American countries… with more to come! This, in my opinion, is one of the world’s most underrated regions.
Also, I’ve done it all solo so be assured it’s safe enough for you to do the same.
Guatemala
I fell in love with Guatemala. It has everything from UNESCO towns to Mayan ruins, natural scenery comprising rivers and caves, and cute towns with spectacular views around Lake Atitlan. Throw in volcano hikes, coffee culture, affordability and a positive safety rating, and you have one of my favourite countries EVER!
Belize
With Caribbean culture on the islands and English as a first language, Belize feels distinct from its neighbours. Although the prices are high, it offers fantastic attractions like the Blue Hole, rich marine life, and caves full of Mayan skeletons. It’s a small country you can explore in as little as a week.
El Salvador
This lesser-visited gem is perfect to visit now its dark days are behind it. I had a refreshing experience and the locals are SO friendly!
COSTA RICA
This is a pricey destination better suited to those on vacation than solo backpacking, however I still managed to have a good time in Costa Rica. The nature is sublime, and very well cared for, and I was so happy to spot plenty of sloths!
